Lubrication-free and maintenance-free bearing technology in belt conveyors in material handling

Compact linear and pillow block bearings installed in a storage and retrieval unit within a short implementation time

With this unit, a belt conveyor takes over packs of different sizes and contents. It is separated on the conveyor and sorted individually and then pushed into different storage channels. The problem was to accommodate a high-performance system with the largest possible storage capacity in a very limited installation space within a very short implementation time. The use of the igus drylin W linear system offered the ideal conditions for this. Other important criteria for the use of igus were the freedom from maintenance and the resulting high system availability.
  • What was needed: Linear bearing drylin W consisting of the guide rails WSQ-20 and the pillow blocks WJ200QM-01-20, igubal pillow block bearing ESTM20
  • Requirements: The problem was to accommodate a high-performance system with the largest possible storage capacity in a very limited installation space within a very short implementation time.
  • Industry: Material handling, mechanical engineering
  • Success for the customer: Linear bearing system and igubal pillow block bearings are completely maintenance- and lubrication-free and save maintenance costs; very high plant availability; short-term availability and delivery of all plant components

Problem

The psb intralogistics GmbH in Pirmasens plans and implements customised systems in the field of material handling. One such system is the so-called storage-slide unit. This is a load handling device (LHD) for an automatic storage and retrieval unit. The central component of the system is a belt conveyor that can take 4 packs of different sizes and contents. It is separated on the conveyor, sorted and pushed individually into different storage channels according to size and content. For this purpose, a pusher is arranged above the conveyor, which moves over the packs with pivoting fingers and pushes the foremost one into the storage. With the same LHD, the storage channels are completely cleared by the pivoting fingers moving over the packages in the storage, gripping behind them and pulling them out of the storage onto the LHD. The sorted packages are removed for shipping.
The problem was to accommodate a high-performance system with the largest possible storage capacity in a very limited installation space within a very short implementation time.

Solution

Once the prerequisites for the plant components had been set, the psb developers set out to find suitable components.
In implementing the automation concept, the supplier of material handling systems now makes extensive use of the igus product range. The core of the solution today is the completely maintenance-free and lubrication-free drylin W linear bearing system consisting of the WSQ-20 guide rails and the WJ200QM-01-20 pillow blocks. For the bearing of the pivoting fingers, the igubal ESTM20 pillow block bearings were also used, which also work maintenance-free and lubrication-free and thus save valuable working time and costs. It also brings with it a very high level of plant availability. Most recently, however, the material handling specialist was also able to benefit from the short-term availability of all system components. Since the system was projected at short notice, every day counted here.
